time out

December 24, 2010 § Leave a comment

Well, traffic sucked and people can’t drive, but, after a very long day full of work and pickles and trying the new Wendy’s fries, I am sitting in my bed in Rhode Island. Actually not really my bed, as is what happens when your parents run a B&B, but this here Goldie Locks has deemed it the best in the house. It could also fit two more people and our elbows wouldn’t even touch.

Oh look, I’m rambling. I just wanted to say Happy Holidays and stuff and that I’ll be AWOL for the next few days. I know you’ve grown fond of my regular posting but this girl’s got some last-minute shopping and baking to do, which will be followed by sitting on the couch with a dog under each hand. Unless, of course, we’re Twitter friends in which case I’ll tweet every present I get (Kidding. And also all I want is socks and a gift card to a supermarket).

I’m going to bed now. I’ll let Battle House (outta JP, kid) take it from here…

See what I did there? You thought this post had no point but OH HEY LOOK A BAND!

Also is anyone in NYC December 26? I have to work two jobs that day and I’m going to need someone to hang out with me after.

I’ve been holding out on you guys, I’m sorry. For weeks now, I’ve been sitting on a sick compilation that’s kind of made for this blog.

Meet “Brooklyn Heat”, six songs by six bands that producer Shane O’Connor thought were doing something worthwhile in Brooklyn. This summer, he put on his engineering and mixing boots and tackled six days (one band a day) of recording at Monsterland Recording Studio in Brooklyn.

And man, this has Boston all over it. It essentially proves this blog’s point. O’Connor broke the connection down for me:

Shark? – no Boston relation
Gunfight – formerly a Boston based band, now Brooklynites
Quiet Loudly – ex members of Pinochio Syndrome, a Boston band.
Little Racer – ex Peasantry, a Boston rock band (disbanded only to form Passion Pit ……)
Magnetic Island – no Boston relation
Quilty – ex MIT dropouts

Four out of six? Hell yes. Plus I think it’s funny that Shark?, a band I mentioned a couple weeks ago when talking about Oops Baby Records, is on this. By funny I mean awesome.

The comp is now up on Bandcamp and can be yours for $0. The cool thing about this is I’d be willing to pay more than $0 for it.

PS! Shark? is playing Glasslands tonight with Bottle Up and Go, Ego Puppets, Libel, Corinne Callen! Convenient, no?

Back in the summer of 2008, I asked a dude if he wanted to go see Faces on Film with me. He’d introduced me to the magic of Helms the month before, I owed him one.

I remember how it started – Mike playing “Natalie’s Numbers” acoustic in the middle of the crowd. It was a great set, I was wow-ed per usual. Dude told me he dug them too, but I wasn’t sure. I mean, I’m no stranger to using the “Oh yeaaaaah that was grrreeeat” line in order to protect someone’s feelings.  Imagine my surprise when, last week in 2010, I find out that this kid, this boy who used to talk about getting a Descendants tattoo, still listens to Faces on Film.

Me! I did that!

This video was released quite a while ago but for some reason I kept forgetting to post it. So I’m going to share it with you now, in hopes of getting another punk to listen to something they normally wouldn’t.

That’s all, carry on.

To start, NOTLD = Night of the Living Deadhead. Have you noticed that every Monday there is an epic kind of line-up at ZuZu, all for the price of ZeRo dollars? We all have Johnny Allen to thank for this.

Tonight is no exception…

Like your music quiet, beautiful, and, yaknow, a bit spell-binding?
Catch Ryan Lee Crosby + Mr. Sister + Mike Fiore (aka Mr. Faces on Film) tonight! 10 PM 21+ Free Duh

This video is a tad bit shaky but is a dece primer of what’s in store for you…

Something Old: Cassavettes’ Last Show

Here we are: The last show of the Cassavettes. I remember living in Scotland, exchanging emails with these dudes during the early stages of this blog. I wish I hadn’t gone crazy and purged the Pilgrims email or else I might have some funny things to share with y’all. If you fancy getting sentimental, just read this at the Cassavettes’ website. I almost welled up but I’m also the girl who almost wells up at pretty much everything.

Tonight will undoubtedly be spectacular. And sell out. Joining the party will be The Luxury, Autumn Hollow, & Barn. 8 PM 18+ $12 at the Middle East Upstairs.
