nyc // nude beach!

February 14, 2013 § 1 Comment

I really need to stop working Friday nights… Here’s your advance warning for a pretty ideal FREE show at Lulu’s!

If you haven’t heard the “new” Nude Beach stuff (versus the stuff from June 2011 when I saw them with Liquor Store), you gotta.

.

Add in the always mind-blowing Crystal Stilts and the really hard to google-search What Next? (who I think is made of ex-German Measles people but I can’t find confirmation. Whatever, we saw them open for Twerps a while ago and it was really good).

To sweeten the deal, you realize Lulu’s is one of those bars that does a free pizza for every drink you drink? Probably my favorite of the free pizza bars cos the pizza is good and there’s Christmas lights usually. This is the kinda show I would absolutely pay money for. 9 PM!

nyc // shark? saturday?

February 2, 2013 § 1 Comment

Well here we are, the night of approximately 56,098 events. I realize you’re probably feeling overwhelmed, confused, happy, sad, mad and hungry while looking right in the face of a giant case of FOMO. Happens to the best of us, and there is no wrong decision. That being said, welcome to the post where I present three reasons to come hang out with us at Danny Screams in Not Kent Street Williamsburg tonight.

A. Shark? and The Hairs and Liz Hogg (of Beach Arabs and Kissing is a Crime). ARE YOU KIDDING.

.

.

B. Danny Screams!
WHAT! A place you might not have been to before!!! Isn’t that what New York’s all about?!!? A cool spot at Grand and Leonard, I think you can see Bushwick Country Club from it? Just in case you need cheese balls. But yeah, nice dudes who let us have the best time back in December – more here.

C. DJs Elfgirl and KatePilgrim!
Working in a venue ourselves, we know well that the biggest buzz kill is when the crowd turns and runs as soon as the last band is over. WHERE ARE YOU GOING? DO YOU LIKE US? Well, not here, not tonight. I always say that my friend Becky is the one who taught me to dance in public and Erin (Elfgirl) is the one who showed me it’s cool to dance at shows. And I don’t dance unless it’s GOOD, so you know no bad songs will touch your ears.

That’s all I got. If you’re seeing some other band (why), you should come by for the dance portion of the evening. If you’re planning on dancing somewhere else, you should come for the band portion of the evening. If you need to stay in and go to bed early, that’s fair and we all need that sometimes.

TREAT YO SELF.

nyc // late notice — parquet courts

November 8, 2012 § 1 Comment

Parquet Courts is one of those bands that, if you saw me only once a week, you couldn’t not know how much I love them. Maybe I’d be playing the album front to back at work /// be running to see them after eating one of your sandwiches at another one of your bars /// oh I don’t know.. just talking about them on a street corner.

This has been going on for a while now (eeeh I sound vaguely psychotic), but what with moving-and-hurricanes-and-killing-our-first-roach, I’ve hardly had time to sit and collect these thoughts. Seeing them get a happy lil write-up from Pitchfork kinda gave my lethargy the kick in the butt it needed. Pretty impossible to say “I told you so” if I don’t ever tell you so, isn’t it? Whoa.

Thing is, I’ve recommended this band to very different sorts of people. I’ve dragged friends who had no business liking this band. And everyone does. IT’S CATCHY. It’s nervy.  It’s so, so good.

You can listen here…

And if you like it, I would absolutely buy it. I sure did. My cat tried to sit on it and it was a scary moment for both of us.

nyc // white wires

September 8, 2012 § 1 Comment

I have been such a bad blogger. Do you know how completely mind-encompassing and -numbing and -exhausting moving is? Finding a place is only half the battle, too… eventually, you have to get you and your parts (my, how they multiply) in there. And inevitably, something (or many things, in this case), is always amiss/broken/drying. Brooklyn, YOU are just GREAT.

Anyways, that’s what I’ve been doing.

Tonight, though, thank goodness… White Wires is at Bell House. THIS IS WHAT I NEED.

Follow that link and check out the newest, WWIII. And meet me in Park Slope for White Wires, Wyldlife (70′s-styled pop/garage rockers who swear by foot stomping, hard drinking, mic swinging, and all forms of delinquency”, if you ask Facebook) and Hollywood (“Loud, fuzzy and trashy punk played just as it ought to be from Baltimore, MD”, Facebook event page quoting again).

Gotta go it’s about to storm see you soon 8 PM $10!

new york // swearin’

August 2, 2012 § Leave a Comment

True to form, I’m late posting what I’ve been thinking for months.

I know I’ve talked about Swearin’ before, but they have a shiny new (few months new) full length out. I don’t know how to describe it except it’s perfect, for me, right now, these days. I just implore you to listen to “Kenosha” (I hope you like Kenosha so much you stay there <— I used to live in the Midwest and know that’s gotta HURT) and then maybe journey on over to If You Make It (a website I seem to have an unrequited crush on) and download the album. Paying for it is optional, in theory, but… you know… if you like it…

Download album here

Oh, also! They’re playing at DBA on Wednesday the 8th with Fancytramp and Slutever (two days after Nude Beach at DBA! It’s been too long since I’ve had a self-inflicted audience-residency there), so maybe I’ll see you?
